The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why would anyone collect items like loose gemstones, you ask? Well to begin with gemstones are extremely beautiful. And like their more familiar cousin, natural diamonds, they can appreciate in value over time. Many people love to find, collect and finish the wide variety of gemstones available today. This article will look at the hobby of collecting loose gemstones.

To start off right you'll need the knowledge on the various gemstones available. You'll find it very helpful to know what you're buying and prevent you from wasting your money. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.

One of the first things you look at is the color of the gem. Gemstones at the top of the ladder have pure colors there as close as possible in pureness to the spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue or violet. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or are too dark can lower the value.

The cut of the stone is extremely important and is used not only to appraise diamonds but gemstones in general as well. A precision cut gemstone showcases the pure color of the stone, lessen any inclusions and exhibits good overall symmetry and proportion. One way of determining the excellence in its cut is to check how consistently it reflects the light over its entire surface. If the gemstone is cut to shallow most of this light were refracted away rather than reflecting inside. Gem color appears washed out.

Another factor to look at is the clarity of the stone under consideration. This refers to the purity of the gemstone or the lack of internal inclusions, internal particles or spots within the crystal structure. Needless to say, stones with no flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.

You will often find that gemstones are often listed according to their size criteria since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different in prices as well. This is due to the difference of specific gravity or relative density depending upon the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there is a wide range and variety when it comes to gemstones. You could try collecting Chrysoprase, Quartz and its varieties or Variscite and then try others. The varieties are nearly endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can find gemstones for yourself instead of buying. Take the example of the United States. In Montana you'll find Agate, Sapphire, Beryl, Amethyst, Smoky Quartz, Obsidian, Tourmaline and Garnet.

Collecting Prescious And Semi-Prescious Stones

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is the art, profession and science of evaluating and identifying rocks known as natural diamonds or loose gemstones. A number of people taken up this profession more as a hobby. They become interested in collecting items like loose gemstone or natural diamonds. You'll even find some that like to visit different areas nearby to hunt for raw or rough gemstones. Some hobbyists will learn to cut or tumble the gemstones they find. If you have an interest in this hobby then follow along as we discuss the different aspects of this hobby.

First off you'll need the knowledge on the various gemstones available. This will help you to know the properties of each stone and prevent you from wasting your money. This will help you make informed decisions.

One of the first things you look at Is gemstone color. Top grade gemstones exhibit colors similar in pureness to the spectral colors of violent, blue, green,, orange or red. Muted gemstone colors or too dark are diminished in value.

The cut of the stone is extremely important and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds but gemstones as well. An excellent cut will highlight the gemstone's color, diminish any inclusions, and show off its symmetry and proportions. One excellent way to determine the excellence of the cut is to consider how well and consistent it reflects light throughout its surface. If the stone is cut on the shallow side most of this light were refracted away instead of reflecting inside. Gemstone color will be washed out.

Another factor to consider is the clarity of the stone. This means the purity of the stone or the lack of internal inclusions, internal particles or spots inside the crystal. Needless to say, stones with no flaws would make the gemstone highly valuable.

Next thing to look at is the duo of size and weight. Due to the fact gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats an equal sized Sapphire would weigh more than 1.20 carats. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite gemstone would be about 1.23 carats.

Although gems are frequently used in jewelry, they are perfectly good collectibles in their own right. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gems that are too fragile or too large to be used in jewelry. Look at each stone and Think of it as a mini sculpture or piece of art to be highly treasured for its beautiful colors and the finish you apply to it. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the US in Arizona you can find Agatized wood (Petrified wood), Azur-Malachite, Turquoise, Garnet, Peridot, Jasper and Moissanite And if you travel to Canada you will find nephrite jade in Mount Sidney Williams, British Columbia or Tourmaline from Chatham Twonship, Quebec and even ammolite from Lethbridge, Alberta. Take up a hobby of loose gemstone collecting and enjoy yourself.

Agates are a cryptocrystalline (crystals too small to be seen even by a microscope) variety of quartz, also known as Chalcedony. The varieties of Agate or Chalcedony are divided more by character than by color. They are divided into a host of gemstones that have been named for locally common varieties. Some of the more beautiful types have retained their names worldwide, like Carnelian, while other names have faded into obscurity as many of the relatively small local deposits became exhausted. It ranks 7 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness.
