How To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? Well for one thing gemstones are extremely beautiful. And like their higher counterpart, natural diamonds they can appreciate in value over time. Many hobbyists love to collect and show case the nearly 150 types of gemstones found today. Follow along as we discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.

First off you need to learn all you can on the wide variety of stones available. You'll find it very helpful to know what exactly you're looking for and prevent you from wasting your money. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.

Color is a very important part in the value of the stone. The closer a color is to its pure spectral color the more highly prized it is. Remember that the spectral colors are orange, green, yellow, Violet and blue. Colors that tend to be darker or paler than a pure spectral color tend to be less valued.

The cut of the stone is extremely important and is used not only to appraise diamonds but you're gemstones as well. A good cut showcases the gemstone's color, diminishes its inclusions, and show off its symmetry and proportions. One way to determine the precision in the cut is to look at if it is able to reflect light on a consistent level throughout its surface. But if a gem is cut too shallow, most of this light were refracted away rather than reflecting inside. Gem color appears washed out.

The next factor to consider is the clarity. This means the purity of the stone or the lack of internal inclusions, particles or spots inside the crystal. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws would make the gemstone highly valuable.

Next on the agenda is the duo of weight and size. Due to the fact gemstones can vary in density or specific gravity. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats a ruby of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.

Collecting various gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there is such a variety when it comes to gemstones. You can start collecting gemstones like Jade [jadeite and nephrite], Opal (Girasol) or Axinite for example. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if money is tight you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. For example in Missouri you can hunt for Pearl, Fluorite, Pyrite and Calcite.

The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Many people today say collecting various loose gemstones or loose diamonds is a favorite pastime. Many people have a great love of the wide array of gemstones found around the world today. Read long as we discuss a number of things you need to know when starting to collect gemstones yourself.

At the very beginning you need to read up on the various gemstones available. This will help you to know what exactly you're looking for so you buy the right items. A knowledgeable buyer is a wise one.

Color is a very important part in evaluating a gemstone. The closer the color of the gemstone is to its purer spectral value the more valuable it is. Remember that the spectral colors are yellow, blue, Violet, green, orange and red. Gemstones colors that are paler or darker than the pure color diminish the value of the stone.

How a gemstone is cut is the next factor to consider before a purchase. The precision of the cut determines the amount of light is reflected by the gemstone. It will ultimately determine the brilliance of the stone and its final value.

A third consideration is the stone's clarity. This means the gemstones purity or the lack of internal inclusions, particles or spots inside the crystal. Without a doubt, zero flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

Next to consider are size and weight. All gemstones [except for pearls and corals] are priced by the carat. One carat is the equivalent of 0.2 grams You should know however that weight and size are not always equal and gemstones. Density or specific gravity can very. Take a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and you will see that a similar sized ruby or sapphire is 1.20 carats.

Though you may find gemstones used a lot in jewelry, they are a great hobby and pastime as well. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gems that are simply too big and fragile for use in jewelry. Look at each loose gemstone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its unique nature and vibrant colors. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the US in Oregon you'll find Agate, Obsidian, Hydrolite and Sunstone. And in Canada you can hunt for opal in the Okanagan, British Columbia or amazonite (microcline) near Eganville, Onttario and even black spinel in Burgess and bathhurst Townships in Ontario. Think of gemstone collecting for the great hobby it is.

The final aspect of a gemstone that determines its value is how much you like it
. A gemstone is for your enjoyment. If you think it is beautiful and it makes
you happy or it reminds you of someone you love or something special in your
life, it is very valuable. Gemstones are very old, sometimes millions of years
old: they can be powerful energetically and emotionally so it is important to
choose the gemstones that you feel drawn to and connected to, even if its not
so rare or expensive. For example, many people love dark blue sapphires: they
seem deep and mysterious. People with such taste are in luck because the stones
they love are plentifully available!
Gemstones and gemstone jewelry are treasured for their beauty and durability.
There are three types of gemstones: Natural, Synthetic, and Simulant. Natural
gemstones include minerals and organic materials such as emeralds, rubies,
sapphires, amber, coral, fossil, ivory, cultured freshwater pearls and natural
saltwater pearls. Synthetic and Simulant are terms used by the USBM for
laboratory grown gemstones. Others in the gemstones industry may use different
terms to refer to laboratory grown gemstones.

Emeralds usually have a high number of internal inclusions called "jardins". Consequently, emeralds are fragile and very susceptible to damage from a knock, heat or vibration. Also, the oil on an emerald can be stripped away by cleaning, making the emerald change appearance. If this happens, simply bring it to your jeweler for re-oiling.
