The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why would anyone collect items like loose gemstones, you ask? Well to begin with gemstones are extremely beautiful. And like their more familiar cousin, natural diamonds, they can appreciate in value over time. Many people love to find, collect and finish the wide variety of gemstones available today. This article will look at the hobby of collecting loose gemstones.

To start off right you'll need the knowledge on the various gemstones available. You'll find it very helpful to know what you're buying and prevent you from wasting your money. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.

One of the first things you look at is the color of the gem. Gemstones at the top of the ladder have pure colors there as close as possible in pureness to the spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue or violet. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or are too dark can lower the value.

The cut of the stone is extremely important and is used not only to appraise diamonds but gemstones in general as well. A precision cut gemstone showcases the pure color of the stone, lessen any inclusions and exhibits good overall symmetry and proportion. One way of determining the excellence in its cut is to check how consistently it reflects the light over its entire surface. If the gemstone is cut to shallow most of this light were refracted away rather than reflecting inside. Gem color appears washed out.

Another factor to look at is the clarity of the stone under consideration. This refers to the purity of the gemstone or the lack of internal inclusions, internal particles or spots within the crystal structure. Needless to say, stones with no flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.

You will often find that gemstones are often listed according to their size criteria since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different in prices as well. This is due to the difference of specific gravity or relative density depending upon the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there is a wide range and variety when it comes to gemstones. You could try collecting Chrysoprase, Quartz and its varieties or Variscite and then try others. The varieties are nearly endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can find gemstones for yourself instead of buying. Take the example of the United States. In Montana you'll find Agate, Sapphire, Beryl, Amethyst, Smoky Quartz, Obsidian, Tourmaline and Garnet.
