Collecting Prescious And Semi-Prescious Stones
By Lee MacRae
Gemology is a term referring to the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. A number of people taken up this profession as a passionate hobby. They collect and evaluate loose diamonds or loose gemstones. You'll even find some that like to visit different areas nearby or in some cases other countries to hunt for raw or rough gemstones. Some hobbyists will learn to cut or tumble the gemstones they find. If you have an interest in this hobby follow along as we discuss the various aspects of gemstone collecting.
Right at the beginning, what you need is to visit the library and get some books. You want to understand as much as possible about the subject of gemstones. The more you learn about each kind of gemstone the wiser will be your purchases. With adequate knowledge you are less likely to be fooled.
The chief thing you need to take into account will be gemstone color. You want the gemstone to be as close as possible to the pure spectral colors. We are talking about blue, green, yellow, orange, red and violet. The prices for very pale or very dark semiprecious and precious gemstones are lower in value.
Gemstone cut is easily one of the most important aspects when buying a gemstone. The gemstone must be cut correctly to reflect light properly. A stone that has a poor cut will not reflect light consistently over its entire surface. The color hue, color tone and saturation will always appear inconsistent
Our next consideration is the clarity of the gemstone. Clarity is the term that refers to the external blemishes or the internal conclusions or flaws of a stone. Larger flaws can be seen with the unaided eye with the others needing a 10X magnification.
The next factors to consider our size and weight. All gemstones [except for pearls and corals] are priced by the carat. One carat equals a 0.2 grams. However you should know size and weight and gemstones are not the same. The density and specific gravity can differ in stones. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats, you will find a similar sized sapphire or ruby would weigh 1.20 carats.
Collecting various gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there is a wide range and variety in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You could try collecting Kunzite, Pyrite or Onyx and then try others. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can go hunting for raw gemstones. For example in New Hampshire you can rock hunt for Beryl, Rock Crystal and Garnet.
